According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, James Harden wants to go to the Sixers. Philly, on the other hand, also wants Harden.

Race Against The Trade Deadline
However, Harden hasn’t made a formal request to get traded and reunite with Philadelphia Sixers executive Daryl Morey because of fears of the public backlash that will most likely come after.

The Nets are desperately looking to win a championship this season, hoping that Harden, Kevin Durant, and a Kyrie Irving will get the job done. If they decide to not trade Harden, Brooklyn is also gambling with the risk of losing Harden who will become a free agent by summer.

ESPN’s Wojnarowski compares this situation to Kawhi Leonard’s stint inToronto, where he was able to deliver a championship to the Raptors.

Harden is still hopeful that Morey will secure a trade for him before the February 10 deadline at 3 PM ET. According to sources, the deal remains a viable option even if both teams are assessing the risk-reward of the Harden trade.

Brooklyn Didn’t Meet Expectations
A little over a year ago, the Nets had to trade key players and draft picks to get Harden to the team from the Rockets. The Nets gave up both Jarrett Allen and Caris in the process of acquiring Harden.

During the first few weeks, it seemed that the deal was the right decision for the Nets. Harden looked like his old self leading the team. During the second round of the playoffs, Harden injured his hamstring during the first minute of game 1 against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks eventually eliminated the Nets and won the championship.

When the offseason started, Brooklyn was included among the top picks to win the 2022 championship. Then it went downhill from here. Kyrie Irving refused to get the COVID19 vaccine. This decision kept him from playing for months before the Nets allowed Irving to play during road games.

Then, there are the injuries that plagued Brooklyn’s lineup. Kevin Durant sprained his knee while Joe Harris had an ankle injury. As for Harden, he has not been playing recently due to his hamstring injury. He already missed three games and the team also announced that he will also miss the upcoming game against the Wizards.

Even with challenges, this doesn’t mean that Brooklyn is already out of title contention for this season. The Nets are still the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. Even if it’s not where fans thought Brooklyn is going to be, they still have a fighting chance if Harden stays with them.

But also, a Ben Simmons for Harden deal still looks like a logical move on paper. ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst confirmed that the Sixers and Nets are still in the “deal zone”. Windhorst said that “I can’t tell you how much James Harden wants this”. He added, “He is screaming in every way he possibly can ‘I don’t want to be here, get me out of here'”.

James Harden Could Make His Sixers Debut on February 15 Against Boston https://sportsrepublic.com/events/james-harden-could-make-his-sixers-debut-on-february-15-against-boston/ https://sportsrepublic.com/events/james-harden-could-make-his-sixers-debut-on-february-15-against-boston/#respond Mon, 14 Feb 2022 17:24:49 +0000 https://sportsrepublic.com/?p=1065 Read more]]> James Harden and the Nets didn’t work out as planned. He was brought to the Nets to compliment Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. But instead, he wasn’t happy and a trade happened at the last minute.

Harden’s earliest Philadelphia debut is expected on Tuesday when the 76ers go against the Boston Celtics. He will now become teammates with Tyrese Maxey who thinks that it’s surreal to work with someone who he grew up watching. Maxey said that “It’s kind of crazy, because he was one of the guys you played with on (NBA) 2K when you were a younger kid”.

There will be changes in how the 76ers are going to approach the game. Sixers coach Doc Rivers told the team that practices are going to be more intense as they have a roster that’s more compatible playing fast games.

Maxey said that “It’s going to be great”. Harden will also play with Joel Embiid. For Maxey “It’s two MVP-caliber players on top of what we have here already. I think one thing that’s really going to help us is the chemistry and the brotherhood that we have here. It’s easy to welcome someone in, no matter who it is, Paul, James, it’s easy to welcome people in because of the community we have here already”.

Unsure When Harden and Millsap will Make Debut

But just this weekend, Doc Rivers announced that they are still trying to figure out how Harden and Paul Millsap are going to debut. The good news is that both teams are doing physicals. Rivers said that “Him (Harden) and Paul were here today and I had good talks with both of them”. Rivers added that “We’re gonna form our plan and as far as health for both and then go from there”.

Harden hasn’t played several games for Brooklyn due to his hamstring injury. Rivers said that “The practice part probably won’t matter as much as the health”. He added that “Let’s say he’s not ready to practice, but ready to play. We’d play him anyway. When you do trades this time of the year, there’s many times you put a guy on the floor with zero practice time. You just throw them out there and you’re gonna have to figure out how it goes. The moment he’s cleared to play whether we have practice in front of that or not, we’re just gonna throw him out there”.

No Free Agency for Harden

As part of the new deal, Harden has not opted into his $47.3 million contract. This means that Harden’s soonest chance to opt-in is by the end of this season.

However, it doesn’t mean that Harden isn’t committed to Philadelphia. It isn’t a secret that Harden wanted to be part of the 76ers along with Embiid and Daryl Morey. Plus, the most lucrative path for Harden is to stay in a long-term partnership with the 76ers. According to Derek Bodner, Harden opting in and eventually and having an extension (traded players will have to wait at least six months before they can sign an extension) will potentially give him $274 million through the 2026-2027 season.

Canelo Alvarez Nears an $85 Million 2-Fight Deal to Face Dmitry Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin https://sportsrepublic.com/events/canelo-alvarez-nears-an-85-million-2-fight-deal-to-face-dmitry-bivol-and-gennadiy-golovkin/ https://sportsrepublic.com/events/canelo-alvarez-nears-an-85-million-2-fight-deal-to-face-dmitry-bivol-and-gennadiy-golovkin/#respond Mon, 14 Feb 2022 17:18:25 +0000 https://sportsrepublic.com/?p=1061 Read more]]> Canelo Alvarez is close to having two huge paydays as the super-middleweight champion is reportedly offered a short deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger revealed that the two-fight deal will most likely generate $85 million for the number 1 pound-for-pound boxer.

Coppinger said that “Canelo and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing are closing in on a two-fight deal worth upward of $85 million for boxing’s top star to compete on DAZN”.

The first fight will be against light heavyweight titleholder Dmitry Bivol who is looking to return to 175 on May 7. If Alvarez wins, he will then defend his super-middleweight title against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17. This would’ve been their rubber match.

Triple G is scheduled to fight Ryota Murata for their 160-pound unification bout in Tokyo by Spring. But just like Alvarez, Golovkin also needs to win to secure September title fight.

Aside from the $85 million offer by Harmon’s Matchroom Boxing, Alvarez is also getting another offer from Al Haymon’s PBC. PBC’s offer is somewhere around the $45 million range and this would’ve involved a fight with Jermall Charlo for the four super-middleweight belts on May 7.

Alvarez signed with PBC last year when he faced Caleb Plant and won via 11th round TKO. The number one pound-for-pound boxer received a guaranteed $40 million for that fight. He fought his three previous fights under Hearn. This includes fights with Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders.

The 31-year-old had an 11-fight deal with DAZN in 2018 after he came out victorious against Triple G in their September rematch. However, Alvarez sued Oscar Dela Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, which was then settled out of court and Alvarez was let go of his contract.

Fight Against The 2nd Best Light Heavyweight

Bivol is currently the number two light heavyweight on ESPN’s list. Bivol only fought once in light heavyweight against Sergey Kovalev in November 2019. If things go as planned, this will be Alvarez’s second fight at 175.

A fight against Bivol would be an opportunity for Alvarez to go for a second title at 175 pounds. However, Bivol will present a variety of problems including a good jab that can control the range. The only problem is that Bivol is not exactly popular among fans. His last two wins in 2021 went to distance.

The most lucrative fight is the third encounter with Golovkin. The first fight between Alvarez and Golovkin in 2017 ended in a draw while Alvarez scored a close majority decision victory a year later. Both fights were a commercial success generating over 1 million pay-per-view buys each. On top of that, both fights sold more than $20 million in tickets.

However, time isn’t on Golovkin’s side. Triple G is approaching 40 this year. His fight with Murata was initially scheduled in December but was later postponed due to COVID19 restrictions. Another issue that Golovkin has to face is that it is going to be his first time in super-middleweight if their third fight ever happens.

The NFL Spent $600,000 Lobbying on Blockchain Technology https://sportsrepublic.com/events/the-nfl-spent-600000-lobbying-on-blockchain-technology/ https://sportsrepublic.com/events/the-nfl-spent-600000-lobbying-on-blockchain-technology/#respond Fri, 11 Feb 2022 17:13:45 +0000 https://sportsrepublic.com/?p=1058 Read more]]> The National Football League spent over $600,000 lobbying on blockchain technology during the second half of 2021.

According to disclosure reports, the NFL has lobbied Congress and different government agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission. Aside from the SEC, the NFL also lobbied the White House Office, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Commerce.

The league has been pushing for a variety of issues including “federal regulation of sports betting”.  On the disclosure reports, the NFL had two Capitol Hill veterans working as NFL lobbyists.

Brendon Plack started working for the NFL in 2019 as its senior vice president of public policy and government affairs. Before he worked for the NFL, Plack was chief of staff to former Senate Majority Whip John Thune.

Aside from Plack, there is also Jonathan Nabavi who started working for the league’s government affairs office in 2017. Nabavi worked for Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa when the senator was still the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Cryptocurrency as an Integral Part of NFL’s Business

The league’s goal is to determine whether cryptocurrencies can become part of the NFL’s business. The NFL is currently making $10 billion annually.

The NFL lobbying on blockchain technology isn’t exactly surprising. Last year, during the league’s owner meetings in New York, officials decided to have a wait-and-see approach when it comes to crypto-related deals.

In September, the NFL partnered with the National Football league Players Association and Dapper Labs to have digital video highlight NFTs. Then, there are the players who became involved in the crypto space including Tom Brady, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, and Rams’ Odell Beckham Jr.

Crypto Still Under a Gray Area

The SEC chaired by Gary Gensler is still trying to regulate different forms of crypto. The SEC chief promised to come up with rules that will protect investors, but until today, there are still no concrete guidelines. Instead, the SEC weighs in on each case whether a crypto-related project falls under registered securities and therefore falls under their jurisdiction.

Crypto’s Presence During Super Bowl Game

Crypto will have a huge advertising presence during the Super Bowl game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Businesses spent millions for an advertising spot. FTX Trading and Crypto.com are among the companies that managed to have spots in Sunday’s Super Bowl. Just how much are crypto companies paying? A 30-second ad costs $6.5 million according to NBC.

Why spend all that money? The Super Bowl’s audience is quite diverse. 4 out of 10 viewers are within the 18 to 49 demographic, the perfect crowd targeted by crypto companies. But of course, the number of crypto ads on Super Bowl doesn’t guarantee success. In Super Bowl 2000, more than a dozen new internet companies advertised on that year’s game. It will later be known as the “dot-com” Super Bowl.

Robert Kolt, Professor of practice at Michigan State University said that “I don’t think the cryptos will be a staple of the Super Bowl—I don’t know how often we’ll see them again”. He added that “The dot-coms went away, and the auto (advertisers) stayed”.

A video containing previously unheard audio recently emerged. The audio involved F1 director Michael Masi and Red Bull sporting director Jonathan Wheatley.

Masi was accused of doing exactly what Red Bull wanted even if it meant breaking FIA rules. This resulted in Max Verstappen winning against Lewis Hamilton who initially had a significant lead against the Red Bull driver.

During the conversation, Wheatley said, “Those lapped cars; you don’t need to let them go right the way around and catch up with the back of the pack. You only need to let them go, we’ve got a motor race on our hands”. That’s when Masi instructed five lapped cars to unlap.

Former F1 driver and Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle slammed the leaked audio messages. He calls it “really uncomfortable” as the outcome of the last Abu Dhabi race is being questioned.

Brundle calls this incident “hugely unacceptable”.

When Mercedes boss Toto Wolff criticized what happened after the race, Masi’s justification followed the tone of Wheatley’s final comment. Masi said as a reply to Wolff, “Toto, it’s called a motor race okay?”.

#IStandWithLewisHamilton and #F1xedTrend

The audio was only made public on December 16 just hours after Mercedes chose to drop its appeal over the last race’s result in Abu Dhabi.

As expected, F1 fans are outraged by this latest development. Both #F1xed and #IStandWithLewisHamilton are trending online.

Fans insist that Hamilton was “robbed” of his chance to win a historic eighth World Championship. A fan on Twitter said “This is so upsetting to listen. Masi literally made a decision under instructions from RB sporting director knowingly breaking FIA rules with much bias”.

Another fan wrote, “Imagine a football team losing 5-0, asking to have 5 goals added to their score in the final minute to make it an interesting end, and the referee just saying ‘understood'”.

An inquiry was launched by the FIA to investigate the controversial end to the last season’s finale. The findings are expected to be released next Monday at an F1 Commission meeting.

Brundle commented that “It’s not new news, and also I think you have to understand that it’s not necessarily telling Michael Masi something he didn’t already know”. Brundle added, “Let’s not assume it’s giving Masi information he didn’t already know in terms of what he could and couldn’t do in terms of the lapped pack”.

When Brundle was asked whether Masi should continue as a race director for the 2022 season, he described Masi to be in an “untenable situation”. He added that “I think he’ll struggle to keep that position. The trouble is that the spotlight will be on him, and every single decision will be analyzed”.

Brundle continued, “What happens if Lewis is up for a penalty? Will he be lenient on that? I think he is in an untenable situation”.

As for the FIA, it released a statement saying that “We are aware of this and it is part of the investigation”.

This Sunday, February 13th marks the 56th edition of the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams facing the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rams have the advantage of playing the game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This marks only the second time in NFL history where a team is playing a Super Bowl at home after last year’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Even so, the Bengals have the betting public on their side despite the disadvantage. 63% of the bets and 59% of the money wagered are backing Cincinnati to win according to data released by Draft Kings Sportsbook. They also have famous bettor Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale on their side, placing the biggest legal sports wager of all time on the Bengals to win it all.

It’s no surprise that the Super Bowl attracts huge sums of money considering the massive scale and importance of this game in American culture. The big game sets massive, record-breaking numbers every year. These are the craziest figures from Super Bowl LVI.

$70,891 – The most expensive ticket sold according to SeatGeek. There are very few seats more luxurious than this one at SoFi Stadium and this is the best available. The average ticket price for this year is $9,648.

$150,000 The bonus available for each player on the winning team. In addition to salary, players receive incentive bonuses for each playoff game they play. There is a $75,000 bonus for each player on the losing Super Bowl side as well to ease the pain.

$5 million – The biggest legal sports wager of all time, placed by Texas mogul Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale. This is his second bet on the Bengals to win, racking up a total of almost $10 million riding on the team. Mattress Mack stands to win a total of $16,207,800 if the underdogs prevail.

$7 million – The cost of a 30-second TV ad for this year’s broadcast. A game will usually run 70 ads, which will bring the total advertising revenue up to almost $500 million for the network. The total ad revenue in 2021 was at $485 million according to Statista.

$117 million – The projected total audience for Sunday’s big game according to data released by demand-intelligence company PredictHQ. This will break the previous record of 114.4 million viewers of the Super Bowl in 2015 between Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.

$220 million – The media rights payout to each NFL team this season. This value is set to increase to $377 million by 2032 under the league’s new contracts. This amount usually makes up most of the annual revenue for each NFL team.

$477 million – The projected Los Angeles revenue generated by the game and its surrounding festivities according to Micronomics. A total of estimated 150,000 visitors will be coming to the city on game day.

$5.5 billion – The total construction cost of the venue. The SoFi Stadium is currently the world’s most expensive sporting venue, with a capacity of up to 100,000 seats – including 13,000 premium seats and 260 luxury suites. It is safe to say that no expenses were spared to create this state-of-the-art ground.

$7.61 billion – The estimated amount of money to be wagered on the game. This figure is up by 78% from last year according to American Gaming Association, with 31.4 million Americans planning to bet on Sunday’s game. Legislation changes have definitely helped this number, as 30 US states currently offer sports betting compared to just 20 in 2021.

Tom Brady Officially Retires After 22 Seasons https://sportsrepublic.com/events/tom-brady-officially-retires-after-22-seasons/ https://sportsrepublic.com/events/tom-brady-officially-retires-after-22-seasons/#respond Tue, 08 Feb 2022 15:18:00 +0000 http://box2019.temp.domains/~embastb3/sportsrepublic/?p=886 Read more]]> After a stellar career that includes seven Super Bowl Championships and 22 seasons, Tom Brady officially announced his retirement on Tuesday. Brady finished his career as a front runner candidate for the greatest NFL player of all time.

The 44-year-old quarterback wrote on social media “I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition—if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game”.

He added, “There is physical, mental and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life. This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore”.

He also mentioned his family. Brady said “I always came off the field and home to the most loving and supportive wife who has done EVERYTHING for our family to allow me to focus on my career. Her selflessness allowed me to reach new heights professionally, and I am beyond words what you mean to me and our family”

TB12 Hints of Brady’s Retirement

Brady’s retirement rumor started when ESPN’s Adam Shefter first reported that quarterback is ready to call it a day.

TB12Sports also posted a tweet that was later deleted. It includes a few of Brady’s accomplishments during his 22-season career in the NFL. It includes seven Super Bowl rings, five Super Bowl MVPs, and three league MVPs.

But Brady’s accomplishment in the field goes beyond those mentioned in the tweet. He has the highest in passing yards with 5,316 passing yards 43 touchdowns to 11 interceptions with a 67.5% completion rate. On top of that, he has the most career wins at 243.

And while the tweet was already deleted, teammates across the league sent their congratulatory tweets

Life Outside The NFL

Brady is not only known for his record-high performance. He is also known for his longevity in the sport. He has maintained his prime longer than any other quarterback. Kevin Clark of The Ringer says it best. He tweeted “Tom Brady is the first guy to retire in his prime while also being one of the oldest players in the history of the sport. Beautiful”. Even without a Super Bowl ring this season, it’s still one of the greatest seasons of his career.

In his post, he mentioned that it is time to focus his time and energy on other things. However, he said that he is also going to take things on a day-by-day basis. He said that “I know for sure I want to spend a lot of time giving to others and trying to enrich other people’s lives, just so many have done for me”.

BRADY Brand

In January, Tom Brady officially announced his luxury apparel brand BRADY. It is described as a “next-generation” clothing line featuring joggers, tops, and fashion accessories.   It says that their clothing produces perform “across every activity—because life is a sport”.

His venture isn’t exactly surprising. Brady is married to fashion supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Brady said in an interview that “I have always been interested in fashion and apparel lines, ever since I was in college”. He added that the BRADY’s designs “wanted to take the different parts of life and express it” through a clothing line.

The BRADY brand aside from being an apparel line is a platform that features athletes from different sports. This includes notable names in basketball, football, baseball, hockey, and tennis. However, one thing that makes BRADY brand unique is it features more college athletes. This includes Coastal Carolina University quarterback Grayson McCall, University of Michigan’s quarterback Cade McNamara and tennis player Andrew Fenty.

Autograph

Brady also co-founded Autograph which is an NFT platform featuring guys like Usain Bolt, Tony Hawk, and Tiger Woods to name a few. Its goal is to give fans the chance to have crypto collectibles. Autograph’s board features major names including Brady, Eddy Cue from Apple, FTX’s Sam Bankman-Friend, and The Weeknd. In July, Autograph partnered with DraftKings and is already working with different marketplaces.

TB12

Lastly, Brady runs TB12Sports. TB12 is a wellness company that offers everything including apparel to supplements. It is also known for selling sessions with a “body coach”. In their website, it claims that it wants to build a “smarter, more holistic approach to health and wellness”.

Brady preaches “The TB12 Method”. This method offers nutrition, hydration, movement, mental fitness, and pliability to achieve a healthy life. He even wrote a book about this method claiming that this method gave him the longevity he needed to stay on top of the NFL food chain for the longest time.

The combined net worth of Brady and Bundchen is at $650 million. Brady in his retirement post said that “The future is exciting”. “I’m fortunate to have cofounded incredible companies…that I am excited to continue to help build and grow”.

Jackson State QB Shedeur Sanders signs historic NIL deal with Gatorade https://sportsrepublic.com/events/jackson-state-qb-shedeur-sanders-signs-historic-nil-deal-with-gatorade/ https://sportsrepublic.com/events/jackson-state-qb-shedeur-sanders-signs-historic-nil-deal-with-gatorade/#respond Tue, 08 Feb 2022 15:16:22 +0000 http://box2019.temp.domains/~embastb3/sportsrepublic/?p=883 Read more]]> Gatorade recently inked a deal with college football phenom Shedeur Sanders, starting quarterback of Jackson State University in Mississippi. This is their first signing of an athlete from a historically black college and university (HBCU) and allows the sports drink brand to use his name, image, and likeness (NIL) in their advertising.

Shedeur Sanders has captivated the world of college football with his sensational play, leading Jackson State to an 11-2 record and a divisional championship. He finished the 2021 season with a pass completion rate of 68.7% on 3,231 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes. He is the first HBCU athlete to win the Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award, given to the most outstanding freshman in NCAA Division I Football.

According to On3 Sports’ NIL valuation database, Sanders is valued at almost $600,000. He is one of many college athletes to stake a claim in the NIL game with over 450,000 followers on Instagram, 175,000 followers on TikTok, and 25,000 followers on Twitter. The exact figures in the multi-year partnership with Gatorade were not made public. He has previously signed NIL deals with other brands, such as Beats by Dre and Tom Brady’s new sports apparel company “The Brady Brand”.

“It feels amazing to sign with Gatorade, a brand known for working with legendary athletes. To be the first HBCU athlete to sign with them, I feel very honored and humbled by that,” said Sanders in an interview with Forbes. In addition, he wishes to bring more opportunities to other HBCU athletes and to attract more national attention to HBCUs overall. He is the first student-athlete to join the elite line-up of influential athletes in Gatorade’s roster which includes Dwyane Wade, JJ Watt, Serena Williams, Candace Parker, Zion Williamson, and Bryce Harper among many others.

The Jackson State Tigers football program, coached by his father Deion Sanders, had their first 11-win season in program history. The father-son duo led the school to the 2021 SWAC Championship – their first in eight years. The SWAC also acknowledged his legendary first college season by naming him “Freshman of the Year” among many other accolades. Shedeur’s football coach and father Deion Sanders is an NFL Legend and is regarded as the greatest cornerback of all time. Interestingly, he is also a rare multi-sport professional athlete who has played in both the Super Bowl and the MLB World Series.

Which college athletes are making NIL money?

Some athletes have started to cash in on the chance to earn money since the historic NIL policy change in July 2021. According to data released by Opendorse, 46% of NIL money is earned through social media promotion and 29% from players’ likeness in advertising. Numbers also show that across all sports, 33.8% of all NIL deals come from football players and 8.6% from men’s basketball. Opendorse is a sports technology company that connects athletes with potential endorsements and NIL deals.
